Prokofiev composed this ballet on a scenario by himself and Serge Lifar, on themes of the Ukraninan countryside. The ballet was dedicated to the memory of Serge de Diaghilev. The piece was not performed again in the composer's lifetime after the 1932 premiere. With a preface by Gerard McBurney.
