Jadassohn studied piano with Liszt and composition with Moritz Hauptmann. He remained in Leipzig and conducted the choir at the synagogue, taught piano and later composition to Albeniz, Delius, and others. His skilful contrapuntal is also illustrated in his 5-volume treatise Musikalische Kompositionslehre.
