Composer of the Month June 2020: James Lee III

James Lee IIIComposer and educator James Lee III received his D.M.A. in composition from the University of Michigan in 2005. His orchestral works have been commissioned and premiered by the National Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony Orchestra, and numerous other orchestras around the U.S. Dr. Lee studied under Michael Daugherty, William Bolcom, Bright Sheng, Betsy Jolas, Susan Botti, Erik Santos and James Aikman. Orchestral commissions include 'Chuphshah! Harriet's Drive to Canaan', based on the life of Harriet Tubman, and 'Sukkot Through Orion's Nebula', premiered by Michael Tilson Thomas and the New World Symphony Orchestra. More commissions are scheduled for the upcoming orchestra season. Awards include a Charles Ives Scholarship and the Wladimir Lakond Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Chamber organizations such as the Montrose Trio, Ritz Chamber Players, and the Harlem Chamber Players have performed and premiered his music. Dr. Lee is a Professor of Music at Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD. His works are published by Subito Music.
