Bericht zum Internationalen Kongress / Actes du Colloque international, 13. / 16. Mai 2007 Folkwang-Hochschule Essen-Werden. Giacomo Meyerbeer’s opera Le Prophète is a key work of the 19th century. Premiered shortly after the revolution of 1849 in Paris, it became one of the century’s most frequently performed operas all over the world. The opera takes as its theme the Anabaptist movement in Münster, a central episode in the history of Westphalia, and uses it to reflect the social-utopian reform movements of the 19th century, many of which were to some extent religious in character. Wagner’s dictum about ‘the prophet of the new world’ (letter of 13.3.1850) reflects in its ambiguity the fascination of the sense of possibility which contemporaries found in the work, while for Verdi Le Prophète was an unsurpassed model for a work of musical theatre. In a project lasting several years the Folkwang Hochschule has created a new edition of the score. For the first time, the work has been reconstructed in its original form, including numerous excerpts which were believed lost. To mark this, the Folkwang Hochschule organised an international academic conference in Essen in 2007 focusing on the themes of edition, conception and contexts, literary and musical reception and the performance history of the work, and with an additional theme of Meyerbeer’s Lieder. This volume contains the papers from the conference.
