Composer of the Month July 2019: T. J. Anderson, Jr.

T. J. Anderson, Jr.T.J. Anderson, Jr. (b.1928) is one of the leading composers of his generation. Holder of a PhD in Composition from the University of Iowa, Anderson studied composition with George Ceiga, Philip Bezanson, Richard Hervig, and Darius Milhaud. Dr. Anderson's oeuvre includes over 100 compositions, including operas, symphonies, choral pieces, chamber music, and works for wind band. He is a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and has been a fellow at MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, Virginia Center for the Arts, the Djerassi Foundation, the National Humanities Center (their first composer), and scholar-in-residence at the Rockefeller Center for the Creative Arts, Bellagio, Italy. Anderson served as the Chair of the Department of Music at Tufts University. He currently holds the position of Austin Fletcher Professor of Music (Emeritus) at Tufts. Anderson served as composer in residence at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra from 1968-1971. A book about the composer's life will be published soon by Borick Press, written by John McDonald with an introduction by Yo-Yo Ma. Anderson resides in Atlanta, Georgia.
