Composer of the Month October 2021: Laura Schwendinger

Laura SchwendingerLaura Schwendinger was the first winner of the Berlin Prize in Music and is a Professor and Head of Music Composition at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Her music has been championed by Dawn Upshaw, the Arditti & JACK Quartets, Jennifer Koh, Janine Jansen, Matt Haimovitz, ICE, Eighth Blackbird, Miller Theater, the Lincoln Trio, the New Juilliard Ensemble, the American Composers Orchestra, the Liszt Chamber Orchestra and more. She has received commissions from the National Flute Association, NewMusic USA, The American Composers Orchestra and many others. Her works have been performed at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Tanglewood, Aspen, Bennington and Ojai Music Festivals, Théâtre Châtelet, Wigmore Hall, and Berlin Philharmonic. Honors include fellowships from the Guggenheim, Fromm, and Koussevitzky Foundations; Chamber Music America, Radcliffe Institute, Harvard Musical Association, Copland House, Opera America, American League of Orchestras and the MacDowell, Yaddo, Bellagio, and Bogliasco Foundations. Reviews for her ‘Creature Quartet’ stated “the sheer intensity of the music is spellbinding…the passion of the composer for her subject shines through like a light.” The San Francisco Classical Voice called her opera ‘Artemisia’ “sumptuous on every level,” and the New York Times described her ‘Song for Andrew’ as “darkly attractive, artful [and] moving.” Her works are published by Keiser/Southern Music.
