"With Runaway Train, I set out to capture the drama of a speeding train, careening down the track, on the edge of control, an image partly inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem From a Railway Carriage (1885): I was also inspired by Arthur Honegger’s wonderfully programmatic piece, Pacific 231 (1923) depicting the power of the old steam train increase to a roaring full throttle. The music also has echoes of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumble Bee, with rapid chromatic runs between the saxophone and violin, heightening drama as the tempo and harmonies build, taper off, and then escalate to a final crash, frozen in air." - T. Mason.
