Sprechend Singen, Singend Sprechen.

Die Beschäftigung mit der Sprache in der deutschen gesangspädagogischen Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts. Due to a lack of suitable methods, it was difficult to cultivate a German style of singing in the 19th century: music educationalists and composers had to oppose the predominant Italian style and develop a different, independent approach that met the requirements of the German language and culture. This study focuses on the discussion on a German style of singing. It quotes renowned German singing teachers of the 19th century and their works, which show different methods to train a voice for a German style of singing, and counter the prejudice that it was nearly impossible to sing in German language. The intentions of the 19th century authors are explained in great detail and illustrated by numerous quotations. Thus, Trummer succeeds in writing a comprehensible book on the efforts to establish a German style of singing and the importance of singing theories at that time.
