In one movement. With performance and biographical notes. Commissioned by the New York Philharmonic. Premiered in New York, September 2003 by the New York Philharmonic and the Hilliard Ensemble. The music sets a poem called The Ruin, written by an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poet in the 8th or 9th centuries, translated and adapted by the composer. Duration ca. 25 minutes.
