Edited and piano reduction by Klaus Winkler. With a preface in German and English. Mendelssohn's 1829 performance of the St. Matthew Passion was the first in 100 years, and helped start a new interest in the works of Bach. The 1841 version was prepared for a Palm Sunday concert. Mendelssohn made a variety of cuts designed to streamline the story and highlight human emotion.
