Nicolai was one of several members of his family who held the post of organist at the St. Peter- und Pauls-Kirche in Görlitz. The Fantasie and Fugue in G was the only work to be published during his lifetime. The Fugue in B flat survives in a mansucript collected by organist Carl Ferdinand Baker.
